Herbs should be an essential part of everyone’s magickal practice. They can be burned, infused with oils, taken internally, given as offerings, etc. There are many, many books on herbal magick and will provide you with much more detail than I can write on a simple web page. For many years Scott Cunningham was a leading authority on the subject with his book Magickal Herbalism, among many other of his published works. There seems to be more criticism these days over his practices, the primary one being that they are the “white bread” version or the blandest version of magick one can have. He did not take into account the darker side of the craft, and one cannot only focus on the light and ignore the dark, or magick will become dangerously unbalanced. Life is not all sweetness and sunshine, and neither is the craft. Read everything about your practice – the good AND the bad. You will need to have all of the proper tools to deal with day to day life because you cannot build a house with only screwdrivers. You will also need a hammer.
I have several books on herbs, and the problem that I’ve found with them is that they list herbs alphabetically, then record their uses. So, if I wanted to do something for healing, or luck, or whatever, I’d have to flip all through the books, sometimes multiple times, to find something to use. That’s inconvenient if you’re not a master herbalist, which I’m not. I’ve decided to provide a list of herbs listed according to the results they can achieve to make the process easier. This list is simple, however, and you’ll need to do research how you should use them.
You may notice that many herbs have many uses. Just like people, herbs have many skills. Some of these herbs also go by other names, so you might need to check if there’s another name used when trying to purchase in a farmer’s market as opposed to a magick shop. Always listen to your inner voice, and if you feel especially attached to an herb for a specific use, then use that herb. You will get much better results than if you used an herb with which you have no attachment. Remember that you get out of your magick what you put into it.
***Important note*** Never ingest any herbs unless you have done sufficient research to know that they will not kill you or make you ill. The healing herbs listed are not to be ingested, they are for burning, etc.
